Notes on a Nervous Planet

Thought-provoking, with some sections I found very uncomfortable to read.

What it’s about

How to survive an ‘always on’ world.

As someone who has a smartphone with notifications on, and a smartwatch, and even reads on an electronic device, I don’t take as many screen breaks as I should. But, I’m okay with that. I feel I can compartmentalise my uses of technology for work, social and personal life.

However, this book does highlight important things to be aware of if technology feels like a detriment rather than an asset in your life.

The writing is excellent. Perhaps too good in some places as sections talking about his feelings such as having an anxiety episode in a shopping centre made me feel very uncomfortable. Even though I have never experienced a similar state myself, and even though I was walking the dog surrounded by open fields, I could feel myself tensing at his descriptions. That’s powerful writing, but something to be aware of if you’re likely to be triggered by these descriptions.
