Why I picked this

I wasn’t sure what to think, but I liked the sound of a murder story from the point of view of the victim – after they’ve died.

What it’s about

Alice and Ruby were always meant to meet. Unfortunately, the meeting came when Ruby discovered Alice’s murder and before Ruby knew her name.

Review

What an absolutely fantastic book. Brilliantly written, fantastically plotted, and with a real interesting concept at the centre.

Alice and Ruby both run away to New York. Alice is fleeing an ill-fated relationship with a former teacher and Ruby having come from Australia to escape the reality that her lover is marrying another woman. Their experiences in New York share similarities, so perhaps they would always have met. Unfortunately when they finally do it’s in tragic circumstances.

Before You Knew My Name tells the story of a murder from the point of view of the victim – after she has died. Alice desperately wants people to know who she was when she was alive rather than defining her by how she died. Ruby wants to find out who this girl was, what happened to her, and why things ended the way they did.

Part ghost story, part murder mystery, but far more than the sum of its parts. This is the work of a skilled and clever writer, and I’d highly recommend it.
